Nellore ist die südlichste Stadt an der Küste des Bundeslandes Andhra Pradesh. Der Landkreis Nellore, mit der Stadt Nellore am nördlichen Ufer des Flusses Pennar als Zentrale, ist 13076 Quadratkilometer groß. Nellore liegt 173 km von der Metropole Chennai.

Der Name Nellore wäre auf den Reisanbau in dieser Region zurückzuführen: Nellu bedeutet Reis und ur bedeutet Stadt. Diese historisch wichtige Stadt war auch als Vikramsimhapuri bekannt. Kulturell ist die Stadt dadurch ausgezeichnet, dass einer der größten Dichter der Telugu Sprache, Tikkana Somayaji, der das Epos Mahabharata ins Telugu übersetzte, hier gelebt und gewirkt haben soll.
