Am Fluss Hooghly gelegen und im Nordwesten der Stadt Kolkata, hatte Hooghly einige Bedeutung, bis Kolkata ihm den Rang ablief.Dieses war ein wichtiges Handelszentrum fuer Briten,Portugiesen,Hollaender, Daenen und auch die Mogulen.Hooghly hat noch viel von seinem alten Charm und wird von Howrah, Nadia,Bardhaman, Bankura und Midnapur umgeben.Das Land hier ist fruchtbar, und die Fluesse Damodar und Rupnarayan fliessen hier.

Die Strasse der Erinnerung in West Bengalen fuehrt nach Hooghly, 47 km von Kolkata entfernt.Als wichtiges Handelszentrum in vergangenen Zeiten, fungierte es auch als Schmelztiegel fuer die verschiedensten Kulturen.In der Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts fingen die Briten und die Hollaender an, ihre Hansdelszentren aufzubauen, als Kolkata anfing, sich zu entwickeln, verlor Hooghly an Bedeutung.
