Wie der Name schon andeutet, ist dieser Ort das Noerdliche Kashi oder Varanasi.Die Kleinstadt liegt auf einer Hoehe von 1550m am rechten Ufer des Flusses Bhagirathi.Dieser Distrikt liegt ganz im Norden des noerdlichen Bundeslandes Uttaranchal in den Garhwal Bergen.Die Entfernung nach Rishikesh betraegt 155 km , die Entfernung nach Gangotri 100km.

Dieser Distrikt entstand im Jahr 1960 und erlangte durch zwei Pilgerzentren - Gangotri und Yamunotri- grosse Bedeutung.Diese beiden Orte sind der Ursprung der Fluesse Ganges und Yamuna.Die wichtigsten Orte sind Dunda, Puroia,Rajgarhi und Bhatwari.Fuer Touristen sind Chaurangi Khal, Bhairon Ghati und Gangotri interessant.Die Fluesse in diesem Distrikt sind Ganges,Yamuna und Rupin und Bhagirathi.
