Dieses Fort wurde im 10. oder 11. Jahrhundert von der Shilahar Familie gebaut. Es ist etwa 300 m hoch und hat eine bebaute Fläche von etwa 1500 Quadratmeter. Früher hieß es Aashwalayangad, später Aaswalgad. Es liegt 12 km von der Stadt Satara. Nachdem Shivaji dieses Fort von den Moguln erobert hatte, bat er seinen Guru, den Heiligen Samartha Ramdas, sein Hauptquartier hier einzurichten. Bald wurde es zu einem wichtigen Wallfahrtsort und wurde zu Verehrung des Heiligen Sajjangad genannt (sajjan = ein Mensch von edlem Charakter).
