Mahatma Gandhi, die große Seele der indischen Freiheitsbewegung, startete an diesem Ort seine einzigartige gewaltlose Kampagne für die Unabhängigkeit Indiens. Dieser Ashram in einer ruhigen Gegend am Ufer des Flusses Sabarmati war auch sozusagen Gandhijis Heimat während des langen Unabhängigkeitskampfes. Es ist eine einfache Anlage, genau nach dem Lebensstil Gandhijis, und ist auch genau so aufbewahrt worden. Es wird hier heute noch Handwerkarbeit getrieben, und das kleine Zimmer mit minimalen Einrichtungen, wo der große Mann gelebt hat, ist jetzt ein kleines Museum mit einer Ausstellung über die wichtigsten Ereignisse seines Lebens.
