Unter der kolonialen Herrschaft war Shillong die Hauptstadt der ganzen ungeteilten Assam Region. Heute ist es die Hauptstadt des Bundeslandes Meghalaya. Shillong liegt auf einer Höhe von 1500 m über NN und hat seinen Namen von der herrschenden Gottheit dieser Region - Lei Shyllong. Als Reiseziel hat die schöne Hillstation viel zu bieten. Viktorianische Bungalows und Kirchen punktieren die sattgrüne Landschaft. Shillong rühmt sich auch eines der besten Golfplätze Indiens mit 18 Löchern.
