Diese tief religioese Inselstadt liegt in einer Entfernung von ca 600 km von der Landeshauptstadt Chennai.Die Insel Rameshwaram hat die Form einer Muschel und man sagt, dass der epische Koenig des Ramayana, Gott Rama, von hier aus nach Lanka fuhr, um den Daemonen Koenig Ravana zu toeten.Vor Antritt seiner Reise hat Gott Rama hier ein Lingam aus Sand errichtet, um zu Shiva zu beten und dessen Segen zu erbitten.Der Rama-Tempel ist unbedingt sehenswert und abgesehen von der Tatsache, dass der Ort immense Bedeutung fuer Hindus besitzt, kann man hier auch sehr gut Urlaub machen.Der hiesige Lingam ist einer der zwoelf Jyotirlingams Indiens und Rameshwaram wird auch Varanasi des Suedens genannt.
