Kumarakom ist 12 km von der Stadt Kottyam entfernt, liegt am Vembanad See und hat ein beruehmtes Vogelschutzgebiet.Dieses Vogelschutzgebiet hat eine Ausdehnung von 101 acres und ist ein Gebiet voller Waelder und Seen.Viele Zugvoegel warden von dieser Landschaft angezogen.Man findet hier Wasservoegel, Kuckucke und Eulen.Aber die meisten der Besucher kommen, um den Sibirischen Kranich zu sehen, der sich hier von November bis Februar aufhaelt.Weitere Arten Zugvoegel sind der Schlangenvogel, Nachtheronen und Egrets.
