Der Ortsname stammt vermutlich vom Wort Jyothimath, diese bezieht sich auf die in dieser Gegend vorkommenden Jyothirlingas.In der Umgebung Joshimats gibt es viel zu entdecken: religioese Plaetze wie z.B. Gangotri, Yamunotri, Rishikesh Badrinath und viele weitere.Diese Gegend ist aber auch fuer Wanderlustige sehr interessant, von hier aus kommt man zum Naturwunder des Tals der Blumen.Fuer Glaeubige ist dieser Ort wichtig, da Adi Sankaracharya hier im 8. Jahrhundert hergekommen ist und einen Tempel gebaut hat.Joshimat liegt etwas oberhalb des Zusammenflusses von Alaknanda und Dhauliganga und man hat einen atemberaubenden Blick ueber rauschende Fluesse und die Himalayas.
