Dimapur erhielt seinen Namen vom Fluss Dimasa, der durch die Stadt fliesst.Dieser Ort ist dasTor nach Nagaland und nennt einen Flughafen und eine Eisenbahnendstation sein eigen.Zu Zeiten des Mittelalters war Dimapur die Hauptstadt der Kachari Herrscher ,heute gibt sich die Stadt modern.Im Stadtkern gibt es ein Relikt aus der Zeit der wohlhabenden Kacharikoenige.Nur ca 37 km von Dimapur entfernt finden Sie das Itanki Wildschutzgebiet, dieses ist der einzige Ort,an dem man den Hoolock-Gibbon in Indien finden kann.Sonst gibt es noch Muntjacs, fliegende Eichhoernchen, Tiger , indische Faultiere und viele weitere Arten.
