Description:
Der nördliche Teil Nashiks heißt Panchavati. Es gibt hier fünf große alte Banyanbäume (banyan = vat; fünf = panch), daher der Name Panchavati. Man glaubt, dass der Gott Ram mit seinem Bruder Lakshman und seiner Gattin Sita eine lange Zeit hier verbracht hat. Hier soll Sita den goldenen Hirsch gesehen haben, und soll von dem Dämonenkönig Ravana entführt worden sein. Entführt wurde sie von dem so genannten Sita Gumpha (Sita Höhle), einer kleinen Höhle unter einem der Banyanbäume. Eine schmale Treppe führt ins Innere der Höhle, wo Gottesbilder von Ram, Lakshman und Sita zu sehen sind. Dieser mythologische Bezug verleiht Panchavati und also Nashik eine große religiöse Signifikanz.
