Ongole ist die Verwaltungszentrale des Landkreises Prakasam im Bundesland Andhra Pradesh. Die Stadt liegt 109 km von Guntur auf dem Chennai-Kolkata Grand Trunk Road.

Beschreibung:

Die Stadt hieß ursprünglich Vangalaprolu, dann auch Vangavolu und Vangolu - genannt nach einem großen Astrologen namens Vangolu am Hof der Addanki Könige. Zum ersten Mal wird die Stadt in Inskriptionen der Pallava Herrscher Vijayaskandavarman und Simhavarman erwähnt, also Ende des 3. und Anfang des 4. Jahrhunderts u.Z.\r\nOngole ist ein wichtiges Handelszentrum, ein großer binnenländische Markt für Nahrungsmittel sowie andere Sachen wie Butter, Ghee (zerlassene Butter), Zigarren, Getreide, Hülsenfrüchte, Erdnüsse, Pfeffer usw.\r\nOchsen aus dieser Gegend - die so genannten Ongole Gitta - sind sehr nachgefragt. Sie haben großen Prestigewert.\r\n
