Etwa 60 Kilometer von Agra in Richtung Delhi liegen die zwei heiligen Städte, Mathura und Vrindavan. Als Geburtsort des Gottes Krishna, eine Inkarnation des Gottes Vishnu, sind diese zwei Städte als Pilgerstätten von besonderer Bedeutung.

Im Altertum war Mathura das Zentrum der so genannten Brajbhoomi Region. Die alten Tempel und die bildhaft schönen Ghats (= zum Baden bebaute Teile des Ufers) am Ufer des Yamuna, die Gebete, die aus den unzähligen Tempeln widerhallen, Pedhas - besonders leckere Süßigkeiten aus Milch: all das bildet den Ruhm Mathuras heute.
