Kottayam ist das Tor zu den Pilgerzentren Sabarimala, Mannanam, Vaikom, Ettumanor, Bharananganam,Erumeli, Manarcadu, Aruvithura und Athirampuzha.Der beruehmte Vaikom Shiva Tempel mit seiner Architektur im typischen Kerala-Stil, wir mit dem legendaeren Parasurama in Verbindung gebracht und befindet sich in 40 km Entfernung von Kottayam.Die folgenden Tempel in der Naehe Changanacherrys sind auch sehenswert:Perunna, Vazhappally und Thrikkodithanam.Der Tempel in Ettumanoor, 12 km von Kottayam, ist beruehmt fuer seine Wandmalereien und Ezhara Ponnana, oder auch die siebeneinhalb Elefanten aus Gold.Die Moschee in Erumeli, ca 60 km nord-oestlich von Kottayam, ist Vanar gewidmet,der ein Zeitgenosse und Freund Lord Ayyappas war, einem Hindugott.Einaml im Jahr hat man hier Gelegenheit, Hindus zu sehen, die der Moschee ihren Respekt zollen, um dann nach Sabarimala weiterzuziehen, um Lord Ayyappa zu huldigen.Es gibt wohl kaum ein besseres Beispiel fuer die Verstaendigung zwischen Moslems und Hindus.
