30 km von Aurangabad, in dem kleinen Dorf Verul, sind die weltberühmten Ellora Höhlen. Ganz fein in den Basaltfelsen der Sahyadri Bergkette gehauen sind diese Höhlen, Teil des Weltkulturerbes der Vereinten Nationen, vielleicht das beste Beispiel von in Stein gehauenen Höhlen auf der ganzen Welt. Ein Zusammenfluss von drei Religionen - Buddhismus, Jainismus und Hinduismus. Es gibt insgesamt 34 Höhlen: 12 buddhistische (600 - 800 u.Z.), 17 hinduistische (900 u.Z.) und 5 jain Höhlen (800 - 1000 u.Z.).
