Diese Kleinstadt ( 40 km von Kolkata) war einst ein Handelszentrum fuer die Franzosen, heute werden hier schoene Artikel aus Ton hergestellt.Die Stadt wurde 1951 zusammen mit Pondicherry an Indien uebergeben. Bis heute kann man hier den franzoesischen Charme erleben, und es gibt noch Bauwerke, z.B. den Uhrturm, aus dieser Zeit.Es gibt auch eine achteckige Kirche, die von den Hollaendern erbaut worden ist.Weiterhin interessant sind das Hooghly Imambara, das portugiesische Kloster und und die Kirche in Bandel ( 45 km Entfernung).In 47 km Entfernung findet man den Hanseshwari Tempel mit seinen ungewoehnlichen Steinmetzarbeiten und in Bansberia den Basudeva Tempel.
