Diese Kuestengegend ist 71 km noerdlich Thiruvananthapuram.Abgesehen davon ,dass diese Gegend das Zentrum der Kashewnussindustrie ist, gibt es hier auch viele Orte von historischem Interesse und interessante Tempel.Kollam ist einer der aeltesten Haefen an der Malabar-Kueste und war einst fuer den Gewuerzhandel hier beruehmt.Ungefaehr 30% der Flaeche dieser alten Stadt werden vom Ashtamudi See beansprucht und machen den Ort zum Tor zu den Backwaters.Die Fahrt von Kollam nach Alappuzha dauert 8 Stunden und ist damit die laengste Fahrt ueber die Backwaters.
